Beyond The Surface
Immersing into infinite.
For the Beyond The Surface installation, we created a volumetric light sculpture featuring 141 infinity mirrors across the 4 walls and ceiling. We used 4230 LEDs to completely immerse our audience in a room of light that gave the optical illusion of infinite depth on two-dimensional planes. This build was featured in Black Rock City’s 2017 Burning Man event.
Going Beyond The Surface
Inspired by Yayoi Kusama's Infinity Room exhibit, I set out on a 8-month journey to create an immersive environment filled with touch-reactive infinity mirrors where viewers could manipulate the visual display of the installation. I wanted this interactive lighting experience to have the backdrop of the most contrasting environment possible: the annual cultural gathering, Burning Man, set the perfect stage surrounded by hundreds of miles of desolate and bare playa in the Black Rock Desert. We raised about $6000 through crowdfunding on Indiegogo to pay for most of the project.
During the day, Beyond The surface was a static room of floating mirrors reflecting the vast expanse of the surrounding desert.
During the night, each mirror came to life illuminating an infinite depth past its two-dimensional plan that people could manipulate using pressure triggered stomp pads located on the floor of the installation.
This project was built in collaboration with product engineers and programmers, James Sannino and Phillip Chang.
